What - Gold Panning Outing Saturday, Sep 8, 9:30 am, Proctor Creek, Acworth
Who - Steve Girdley & Bob Schmiedt will lead the outing. Steve can be reached at girdley7@gmail.com or 404-202-9646, if needed.
When - Saturday, September 8, 9:30 am. If inclement weather, outing is canceled. We usually stay 3-5 hours, but you can depart anytime.
Meet at - Kenworth Park, Acworth. The Park is about a mile south of historic down town Acworth at 3900 South Main St, Acworth, GA 30101. Drive all the way to the rear and park on the left just before the Senior Center. For a map, click on: https://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8&q=Cobb+County+Kennworth+Park&fb=1&gl=us&hq=kennworth+park&hnear=0x88f51549a6182ce5:0x7f6582bc0c20bc3f,Acworth,+GA&cid=0,0,11349485688587938484&ei=vs5BUoSSEYS49QSD0IGoAQ&sqi=2&ved=0CIIBEPwSMAs
What Creek - Proctor Creek on US Army Corps of Engineer property. It is a 100-yard walk from the parking area to the creek and you can prospect up or down the creek. There were two productive gold mines up the creek above Corps property, but gold has been found from the upstream Corps boundary down to the lake.
Flea Market, Safety, Etc - We’ll start off with introductions, some words of safety, and sell any extra gear you have before we head to the creek.
Wear - Recommend wear long pants (may be briars, ticks, chiggers & poison ivy) & tall rubber boots (Walmart, ACE Hardware) or waders (Dicks). Or, if careful you can wear shorts and water shoes in warm weather.
Bring - Bring your own equipment. Bring pan, classifier, sucker bottle, vial (Little River Marina Store), a full-size, long-handle spade shovel (partly for safety reasons) (Big Lots, Walmart), water, folding stool or bucket to sit on, mosquito lotion, and zip lock bags to water proof your electronics/wallet. Travel light (back pack is handy; at any thrift store).
Optional items – Snack, camera, cell, vial, eye dropper, crevice-ing tools, & lanyard to hold your sucker bottle, rubber gloves when cold water (Harbor Freight).
Equipment, Guides and Supplies - Most of us use the Garrett Standard Gold Panning Kit that Little River Marina Store on Bells Ferry Road sells for about $30 as it has everything you need except boots and shovel. They also sell the what/where/how-to Recreational Gold Panning Guide, and the Lake Allatoona Gold Map plotted with 30 confirmed gold creeks.
Panning Rules & Etiquette - This creek is on Army Corps property. They only allow gold prospecting in the stream bed with pans and shovels. They do have enforcement authority. See http://www.sam.usace.army.mil/Portals/46/docs/recreation/OP-AL/Docs/Gold%20panningpolicy.pdf for details, and please refill your large holes.
Who Else - Kids, friends, novices, observers, & pets welcome.
RSVP - NO need to RSVP, just come for fun.
