2. What - Gold Panning Outing.
When - Saturday, October 22, 10:30 am. If inclement weather, outing is canceled. We usually stay 3-5 hours, but you can depart anytime.
What Creek - Blankets Creek in the SORBA Mountain Bike Park property. See http://sorbawoodstock.org for the creek and trail map.
Where - Meet Steve Girdley (hurt my back and may not make it) at the covered picnic table at the Trail Head of the Blankets Creek Mountain Bike Trail. Park in the Bike parking lot on the south side of Sixes Road, Canton next to the River Church, 2335 Sixes Rd, Canton, GA We'll introduce ourselves and cover some basics then walk to the creek.
Wear - Wear long pants (may be briars, ticks, chiggers & poison ivy), tall rubber boots (Walmart, ACE Hardware) or waders (Dicks), and long rubber gloves for cold water (Harbor Freight). Wear layers in case it gets warm.
Bring - Pan, classifier, sucker bottle (Little River Marina), definitely a full-size, long-handle spade shovel (partly for safety reasons)(Big Lots, Walmart), water, snack, folding stool or bucket, mosquito lotion, and zip lock bags to water proof your electronics/wallet. Travel light (back pack is handy; any thrift store).
Optional items - Camera, cell, vial, eye dropper, crevice-ing tools, & lanyard to hold your sucker bottle.
Equipment & Guides - Most use the Garrett Standard Gold Panning Kit that Little River Marina Store on Bells Ferry sells for about $30 as it has everything you need except boots and shovel. They also sell the what/where/how-to Recreational Gold Panning Guide, and the Lake Allatoona Gold Map plotted with over two dozen confirmed gold creeks. Also drinks, snacks and mosquito repellent.
Panning Rules, Etiquette and Safety - This creek is on Army Corps property. They only allow gold prospecting in the stream bed with pans and shovels. They do have enforcement authority. See details at http://www.sam.usace.army.mil/Portals/46/docs/recreation/OP-AL/Docs/Gold%20panningpolicy.pdf . Please refill your large holes.
Who Else - Kids, friends, novices, observers, & pets welcome. NO need to RSVP.
